After 15 years of the Chromebook, Google is now phasing it out for the new Googlebook, a laptop built entirely around Gemini. Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo are all making them, with first units shipping this fall.

It's a cursor with Gemini baked in. Wiggle it and it suggests contextual actions. Point at a date in an email and it offers to book the meeting. Select two images and it visualizes them together. Some are loving the new updates, and others are questioning the value.

Google won't confirm pricing, processors, or screen sizes. ChromeOS is being phased into an unnamed Android-based platform. And, according to Google, the glowbar on every Googlebook lid is "functional and beautiful," which time will tell if that claim is true.

Nope. Codex still runs on your laptop, the phone just gives you a live window in to approve commands, review diffs, and kick off new threads. The catch: Mac only for now, with Windows pairing coming soon. Anthropic shipped this same feature for Claude Code back in February, which is why OpenAI is moving fast.
