The Model Hardware Standard gives AI agents one interface for programmable lab and manufacturing equipment. It is model-agnostic, touted as a safe physical layer for AI-enabled robotics, and eventually planned for open source.

Early trials linked liquid handlers, microscopes and robotic arms, shrinking some integrations from weeks to hours. A Carnegie Mellon workflow ran dose-response experiments three times faster.
This is a limited research preview, not a finished safety standard. Anthropic says models still struggle with physical constraints and sometimes require expert correction.

🔐 Step 1: Name the boundaries. List actions that always need approval, such as sending messages, making purchases, deleting files, publishing content, or changing an account.

✍️ Step 2: Create one reusable instruction. Ask your AI to turn that list into a short rule: “Before taking an outside action, explain what you plan to do and wait for my approval.”

🧪 Step 3: Test it safely. Give the AI a pretend task that would normally trigger an email or purchase. Check whether it pauses and asks.

🧹 Step 4: Remove unnecessary access. Review which apps, files, and accounts your AI can reach. Disconnect anything you are not actively using.
